We were lucky. We definitely had planned to go to Hoi An while in Vietnam, but we didn’t expect to be there during a full moon lantern festival. I don’t remember if the bus ride to Hoi An was eventful or not. I think we were still reeling from the horror that was the 17 hour bus ride into Vietnam.
We did get separated while in town though trying to find a hostel. Everything was booked. So we had to split up.
But, I remember staying in the fanciest place the whole entire trip. My room had three beds. My hostel had a pool & margaritas. Hoi An is also extremely famous for clothes and shoes. Whatever custom clothes you want made, they will make it for you. People from all over the world come to Hoi An to get clothes made at a super cheap price.
I was in heaven.
We quickly went into town and explored and found out that the festival was going on.
It was where I took that one picture.
A picture of a girl setting her lantern on the water.
The picture that started it all.
The picture that got me emails from National Geographic magazine editors.
It seems so long ago now.
Hoi An, Vietnam.

Here it is.

Yes yes I know I am behind on the road trip pictures, but this is my blog so BACK OFF! (said in a nice way).
Our first stop on our road trip to Atlanta was Santa Fe, New Mexico. Besides the trouble we got in for not calling Dalina and letting her know we were in Santa Fe, it was a pretty awesome visit. First of all, when we arrived we nearly froze to death because we had no idea how incredibly cold it was. Luckily, we were near an REI store and we pretty much ran to buy warm beanies for our heads.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I’ve actually been pretty occupied. Traveling in a packed car across the country, exploring unknown places of the United States, with your best friend takes up a lot of your time actually.
I swear I will catch up with you guys soon.
Lots of changes coming to the blog as well (AND in life!)
I can’t believe it, but its going to be another incredibly memorable year as well.
Let’s just say that anyone of my friends that want to visit San Francisco SHOULD probably do so before May…..
I am excited.

Every morning, after the kids have arrived to school, the bell is rung to begin the ritual of morning prayers. You can see the prayers in the beginning of the video I made, but the purpose of this post was to explain to you how hot it was.
So extremely hot and humid, that LOCAL kids sometimes cannot stand the heat.

I think it is a complete miracle that I did not pass out myself at one point. It could have been the adrenaline of everything, but there were definitely times when I would get back to my room and collapse. It would just be too hot to even do anything. We were unable to shower between 11 and 4 in the afternoon because the water would get unbelievably hot.
No wonder I developed a nasty heat rash on my arms.

Regardless of heat, or classmates collapsing, these kids will start and finish their morning prayers no matter what.

India & Nepal – mPowering Trip from Gabriel Gastelum on Vimeo.
Here is a small video I made from my recent trip with mPowering. It would probably be better if I was a video editor, but this will have to do. Also, if you don’t have a huge smile at 1:37 you probably have no soul.
